Hooks and peg legs have been commonly-used prostheses throughout history, and are in fact still used today. They aren't limited to use by pirates, though popular image associates them with pirates.
If a pirate lost a hand, a hook could be easily found on a ship. However, there wasn't a doctor present--the chef performed the surgery.
That being said, it wasn't terribly common.
Well I'm sure any Pirate would prefer to keep both hands, the life of a pirate is very dangerous and there are many opportunities to lose hands to accidents or to battle. Not just pirates, but many sailors back in the day lost legs too. I'm sure you know of peg-leg pirates.
But anyway, I have never heard of a real pirate with a hook for a hand, but it could have been possible for a pirate to have a prosthetic fashioned for him. There are stories of ancient soldiers forging artificial hands to hold swords after they had lost their own in battle.
To bring this to a close I'd say that it would certainly have been possible for a pirate to have a hook for a hand, but not very likely. There are many other things a pirate would rather have, like a gun or a simple device to hold a sword. You see, hooks are mainly for fishing, and pirates don't do that. Sure, a fisherman would have a hook for a hand, but a pirate, not likely.

according to the book of pirating there is no record of any pirates having a hook to replace their hand. therefore this must be a myth from pirate stories.
Actually, very few pirates had hooks. This is part of a largely fictional pirate stereotype.
I don't know, i haven't checked. Maybe you should . . . good luck with that.p.s. ( watch out for their hooks!)There is no prescribed dress code for pirates. They wear what they choose.
I don't really know. I think you can not use barbed hooks in Wilson's pond to fish.
Hooks Warner debuted on August 21, 1916, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field; he played his final game on June 17, 1921, playing for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Pirates are nasty, rude, mean and not really good listeners
Attaching a kayak to the ceiling of a garage can be done using large hooks. This can be done with many hooks, ut using really strong hooks is ideal, because it can hold the weight.
Pirates wear hooks and eye patches. The one trying to be found now is Captain Morre's hook and eye patch. It is most likely hidden where his ship sank.
Yes, there were pirates, mainly around in the 18th century, or the 1700's.
