In November 1863, during the siege of Knoxville he strengthened the passive defenses of Fort Sanders by telegraph wire strung between tree stumps at knee height. That stratagem, probably adopted for the first time, caused many losses to the attacking Confederate infantries on 23rd November, because the men remained tangled in that obstacle and were killed by the Union fire.
