Many people are confused about the term totem pole and apply it indiscriminately to various other types of poles set up by other tribes. It is likely that the Woods Cree did set up poles with skulls and hides of moose, caribou or bear as a mark of respect for the animal spirits and as burial ground markers - but these are not totem poles.
