In the 1930's, during the Great Depression, the motion picture industry provided an escape for people and their problems. People regularly invested a few of their last cents to see movies that transported them to worlds of adventure and glamour and provided them with hope. The studios were not thriving and had to go into debt in order to finance most pictures. Survival tactics included reducing admissions and giving away prizes to keep people in attendance.

the motion picture industry thrived because it appealed to the top end of the market, that way when everyone lost money, the (relatively) rich people who already had large sums still had enough money to go to the movies, and while poorer people do go to the movies, the richer population goes there much more frequently, and so most of the tickets bought were bought by wealthy buyers industry were wealthy, as they showed up more often.
