At the convention, none of four front-runners could nail down the nomination and none of them were Southerners. The Southern Democrats really wanted to win the election in 1852 and take back the White House from the Whigs many of whom were strongly anti-slavery. Pierce was a fresh face , did not carry any political baggage , was a war hero and was young and good-looking, so the Southerners figured he could win and they were willing to take a chance that he would uphold the Compromise of 1850 and keep the union together.
