Best Answer

The reasons have been debated since the bombings.
Apologists say dropping the bombs saved lives and hastened the end of the war with Japan.
The most credible reason is political. The Japanese were in retreat and the end was inevitable. Knowing there would be political bargaining at the end of the war, the bombs were dropped to show the USSR that the US had atomic weapons.

President Truman spoke to the people about the event. He stated that the weapon will end the war soon. Also he wanted to end the ability of Japan to go to war forever.
