Why did Ben-Kenobi raise his lightsaber to Darth Vader and let himself die?

Upon seeing Luke, he sacrificed himself for Luke and the Falcon's crew to escape. Kenobi let down his guard and concentrated for a moment, vanishing to the spiritual plane; his body disappearing entirely just as Vader's saber (instead of severing his body) passed through his empty robe. Obi-Wan became a force ghost, and became more powerful than ever.

∙ 13y agoBecause during order 66 all the clone troopers were killing their commanding generals.Not even Yoda could go against an entire clone army so he escaped to Dagobah before Anakin had completely turned over to the dark side and become Darth Vader.When he got there he had no way of returning and became too old to defeat him.

∙ 8y agoIf he didn't, neither Anakin (Darth) nor Luke would fulfill their destinies. As a spirit, Obi could guide Luke more easily into his role as a Jedi.
