Many religions use statues to help them pray to a particular god or saint. The faithful know that the statue is only a representation of the real god, but feel that the statue helps them pray.

Hindus believe in One God. However, they also worship all manifestations of that God. They believe that God could be anywhere; in the trees, in the rains, in the stones, within yourself, etc. Hence, every aspect of this nature is worshiped.

Keeping that in mind, it is easier for a devotee to focus on God, if he has a picture or figure of God in front of him than to believe in an abstract form. The shape of the statue is the artists imagination.
