There is no official reason why members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) fold their arms while they pray. Church members do not have to fold their arms. Some might clasp their hands, hold hands with family members or friends nearby, or just put their arms to the side. It is the words that are said, not the position that one is in, that is important.

Church members fold their arms or clasp their hands during prayer for more practical reasons. The first is that prayer is meant to be a pleading with God, and must show respect and reverence to Him. Folding your arms or clasping your hands shows pleading, reverence, and respect. Another reason is to keep your hands from being distracted by something else. This is much the same reason why Church members close their eyes during the prayer. All focus and attention should be made toward God during prayer - by closing your eyes and folding your arms, you will not be distracted by touching or looking at other things.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) typically fold their arms and close their eyes while they pray. If they are in Church worship service they will remain seated in their seats or pews, but at home they generally kneel. They may also stand while praying, depending on the situation.

There is no specific reason why this is done. Since praying is considered talking with God, a person is expected to be in a position of respect and avoiding distractions. Closing the eyes and folding the arms are both respectful and keep your eyes and hands from any distraction. Sitting and kneeling are signs of respect.

Mormons do not 'cross themselves' touching their head, shoulders, and chest, as Catholics and some other Christians do.

How many times do Mormon pray?

There is no set number of times that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) pray. Most Mormons will pray at least morning and night, either alone or with family. They also usually pray before meals. Mormons believe they can pray anytime, anywhere, and it is common for them to stop and give a short prayer of thanks when something nice has happened, or pray for comfort or blessing when they feel they or a loved one are in need. The Bible says to 'pray always', so many Mormons try to keep an attitude of prayer throughout the day. During church meetings, it is customary to hold an opening and closing prayer for each meeting, as well as two prayers for the 'sacrament' (communion) - So a Mormon attending church on Sunday will pray at least 8 times over the course of their three hour church service.
