Charity is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is calculated at 2.5% of a persons yearly savings and or land, property and other of the like. In an ideal world if this was implemented then poverty would be eradicated.

Giving voluntarily alms to the poor or giving alms to the poor as Zakat (which is a kind of ritual charity and is an important pillar of Islam) achieves the following benefits:

  • It purifies the heart of the contributor from selfishness and the greed of wealth.
  • It purifies the heart of the recipient from envy, jealousy, and hatred.
  • It purifies the property of the contributor and cleanses it from the shares that must distributed among the due beneficiaries.
  • It purifies the society from ill feelings, corruption, and disintegration.
  • It reduces the sufferings of the needy and poor members of the society
  • It shows the general philosophy of Islam which adopts a moderate course between capitalism and socialism and between materialism and spirituality.
  • It is a demonstration that Islam is not just ritual worships but has an equally important other social part that to do good deeds for the benefit of the society.
  • It maintains the economic balance through movement of money from person to another, thus minimizing the unemployment via investing the money of Zakah in different projects.

How did Islamic law affect Muslims towards christians and Jews?

Islamic law is actually secular - Islam does not have a clergy or institution like you'll find in Christianity and Judaism. This means Islamic jurisprudence deals with Muslims as it does people of other faiths. But there are certain distinct privileges within the faith which are reserved for Muslims. Things like Zakat (alms to the poor) but they can be spread to include non-Muslims as "sadaqa" (alms to the poor in general). Its not the religion or laws that affected Muslims attitudes towards other faiths, but the various cultures and politics of Muslims around the world.
