Why do a lot of religious people dislike atheists and agnostics?

A lot of religious people do not know or understand what Atheism is. If they don't understand something it often means they are afraid of it, hence the dislike.

Many people create a system of casual beliefs and take it that:
- Everyone likes Christmas, birthdays, fathers/mothers day
- Everyone wants to go to Disneyland, Vegas or a Mexican resort
- Everyone likes family get togethers
- Couples all want to have children
- We know our (ethnic group) is best and you cant trust those (other ethnic group)
It shocks them when someone says "No, I don't."
In the case of religion the belief system is much stronger because most of their family, friends and social contacts support it. An agnostic or atheist saying it's not important makes him an outsider causing the xenophobia (fear of strangers) to kick in. This us and them attitude was very valuable in early human society to protect the tribe or clan. Those organizations found remedy for this type of concern is to huddle with the other members of the tribe for peer assurance through a few rounds of "We're right, he's wrong." Admitting,even slightly, that the outsider may be right might bring down the wrath of the entire tribe on the person.
