This depends. Some wear armbands to stop the sweat from dripping down their hands, wear it to look cool... and lastly, some wear armbands to protect their arm from rubbing/sticking against the bass.

Flea plays bass. But most bass players CAN play guitar. And most guitar players CAN play bass. So Flea probably does play guitar! :)
playing bass is that your giving back up to your fellow players playing bass is highly important to any band, it helps the drummer and guitarist keep their rhythm, and adds a deep note to the guitarist so he doesnt sound like crap. you can't have a good band without a good bassist.
