There are few magazines specifically for bass guitar players. Most notable is Bass Player Magazine. There's also Bass Frontiers Magazine and Bass Guitar Magazine.
Some of the most famous harpsichord players in time are Scott Ross, Skip Sempe, Rosana Lanzelotte, etc.
In terms of Bass Guitar, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, and Jaco Pastorious come to mind. For upright bass, Charles Mingus, Jimmy Blanton, and Paul Chambers. Stanley Clarke is famous for playing both.
I would say it's totally up to you and your preference. Do you want something neutral or flashy? Do you want something jazzy or hard rock? If you want to model after a famous bass player, just find some great bands you enjoy and model their players.
Playing the bass clarinet is not a very good way to become famous. The bass clarinet is usually played as a second or third instrument by reed men - clarinetists or saxophonists. Bass clarinet specialists include Todd Marcus, Michael Pilz and Jacob Stein. Jazz players who used the bass as one of their primary instruments include Eric Dolphy and Benny Maupin. More famous names who occasionally played the bass clarinet include jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington's bari sax player Harry Carney, and jazz flautist Herbie Mann. Me too - but I'm not exactly famous.

Flea plays bass. But most bass players CAN play guitar. And most guitar players CAN play bass. So Flea probably does play guitar! :)
