They foam because they have trouble breathing! I know, sad, huh? Try putting it in water.

It is not unheard of for a crab to produce foaming. Most experts think that crabs do this on occasion to aerate their gills (crabs have gills) to keep them moist. This causes foam which you can clearly see. Another explanation also has to do with aeration, i.e. the crab could be producing bubbles not just to aerate its gills but also because oxygen levels in the water have become too low. Blowing bubbles in the water keeps helping oxygen levels up. Keep in mind, therefore, that you need to clean the tank completely at least once a week (removing everything, cleaning the tank thoroughly with hot water - do not use any soaps or chemical products which could be harmful to your crustacean) so that the water in the tank gets refreshed at least once a week.

When a crab starts suffocating, or losing oxygen then start to foam to get oxygen. Without foaming it could die.
