You made a spelling error in your question you meant to say "why do hamsters only live three or four years" Any ways the reason is because different creatures have a different lifespan, it has nothing to do with size, because budgies can live from 15-20 years and they are very small creatures. Hamsters just have a short lifespan it is just the way their life was made to be. :) Very simple.

Small animals, such as hamsters, tend to have shorter lifespans than larger animals.

It's not that they die young, their life cycle is just quicker than ours, they can breed when they are 4 weeks old for example.
