Tradition, insecurity, faith, and may even be genetically imprinted, though I hope not. People come together as a community and to strengthen their ties with one another they worship some sort of deity or other, because, I think gives them strength and comfort to function individually, and as a whole.

∙ 14y agoIn prehistoric times, early man had no understanding of their environment. They created stories to explain natural phenomena and understandably believed there were powerful entities who they couldn't see and who caused things to happen. A rich world of deities evolved with appeasements, offerings, ceremonies, rules and rituals and even human sacrifice. Elaborate belief systems evolved in different parts of the world, many with similar dogmas. Those systems became a way to form a community and a way to control the community, sometimes for political purposes.
As time passed natural phenomena were explained by science but the belief in supernatural beings was so powerfully entrenched and comforting that humanity couldn't let go. Most people are terrified by the possibility that we are here for a time and then we die and there is no supernatural parent who is taking care of everything. Many people need someone or something to tell them what to do.
