Rock'nRoll is doing the same thing. All the heavy metal coming out now sounds just like Metalica. In fact, every sub genera sounds like a rehash of something done ten or thirty years ago. edit: I just wanted to add something pertaining to the way one listens to jazz in particular. Folk, Classical, Rock 'n Roll, and other forms of music do not act on the mind in the same way. There is an anticipation/satisfaction routine to the music. When the listener tries to listen to Jazz in the same way, the listener will only be become frustrated. To enjoy Jazz, the listener has to learn to "unlisten." A skilled musician has the ability to hear a lot more in music than I can, but I caught a Jazz musician listening to some flat, simplistic, and repetitive stuff that was supposed to be "The Blues." I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions from this observation.
