Objects float because of density. All objects are made up of atoms, and atoms have mass. In order to find the density of an object, divide the mass by volume. If the object is less dense the fluid it is in, then it will float.
Because they are less dense than the water.

We call the amount of mass in a given volume of space the density. For instance, we could measure the mass of some fresh water in a container. We would then divide the mass of the water by the volume of the container to find the density. However, if we filled the same container with salt water, it would have more mass because the ocean water has the mass of pure water plus the mass of the salt. Since there is more mass in the same volume, ocean water has a greater density then fresh water.

For something to float, it must have a density that is less than in what it is floating in.

It may seem odd that an enormous ship can float when steel is denser than water. However, if you look at the entire ship you see that there are many places filled with things less dense than water, like air. This means that the density of the entire ship is less dense than that of the water it floats in.

To understand why things less dense then water float in water, go to the question "What is the buoyancy principle?" in the Related Questions section below.

What makes some things float?

Density of the object and buoyancy of the water/liquid.

What is a liquid that makes things float?

It is quite common for various things to float in water. But any liquid can cause things to float.

What are the reason why some things float in the water?

Certain things float in water because their density is less than the density of water. If something experiences more upthrust in water than its weight(upthrust>weight) or upthrust=weight, then it floats in water.

Why do some things float and why do other things sink?

The object which have more density than water it sinks and which have lower density than water it floats.

Why does salt water make things float?

salt makes the water denser, so things that are now less dense than the salt water will float

How do things float?

things float because they are less denser then the water. second things do not float, the molecules from the water support the molecules from the thing on the water. that is how something heavy can float. it just has to be boyent meaning it is spread out enough so there is more water molecules to hold it up. if you mean in the air it is the same concept.

Why does fresh water float on salt water?

Freshwater is less dense than saltwater, and so it tends to float on top, as less dense things tend to float on denser things.

Do things float in alcohol?

Yes. For every fluid, there are things that float in it ... they just have to be things that are less dense than the fluid. That's how stones float in mercury, logs float in water, and hot balloons float in air.

Why does some things float on water while others dont?

Some objects will float on water as the density of the object is less than that of water. Conversely, if an object is more dense than the density of water, then it will sink.
