Why do submarines float if they weigh more than water?

Best Answer

The same reason all vessels made of steel float - they're full of air filled compartments which keeps them buoyant.

While surfaced, a submarine's Main Ballast Tanks are also full of air. When the boat wishes to submerge, those tanks are emptied and filled rapidly with seawater. The boat's fixed ballast weight is a known variable, and variable ballast, in the form of water that can be pumped in or out of the boat, allows for adjustments in buoyancy control while submerged.

When in water why is your body mostly under it?

because of your mass, you weigh more then the water and you sink, now the oxygenated red blood makes you float more and the air in your lungs also help you float.

Why cannot submarines go in deepest parts in oceans?

As submarines go deeper they are surrounded by more and more pressure from the water arround them. There are not currently any submarines that can withstand that amount of water pressure.

Which weighs more you or your volume of water?

if you are talking about the same glass that had water in it and THEN froze, then my friend the weight is the same. Ofcourse this is correct only if while freezing, no water spilled out of the glass (because ice takes up more space than water.

Does kerosene float on water-?

no, beacuse there is more sugars patick present in it so it floats

Is it easier to sink or float in salt water?

it is easier to float, salt water has a higher density. The more salt, the easier it is to float.

Can swimmer float more easily on a freshwater or an ocean?

The more salt there is in the water, the easier it is to float.

When oil leaks into the ocean why does the oil float to the surface?

Oil and water don't "mix" together in the normal sense, and oil is less dense than sea water. That makes the oil float because the water, which is more dense, pushes it (the oil) to the surface.Archimedes' Principle- a body immersed in a fluid experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. Therefor if one were to weigh a given amount of oil and the same amount of water, water would weigh more. Three stages of buoyancy are positive(floats) negitive(sinks) neutral(doesn't float or sink).

Why does salt in water make objects float?

Things float in water if they are less dense than the water they are floating in. Putting salt in the water makes it more dense, so things that are a little more dense than ordinary water float in salt water.

Can a egg float in cold water?

They can float in hot. Like if you boil eggs, before you set the pot, water, and eggs on the stove, you see that they don't float until the water gets warm.

Why does metal NOT float on water?

If the proposal is to float the metal on water, most metals won't float. That's because most metals are more dense than water and will sink. Note that this proposition sets aside any reaction that might occur between the metal and water. This is because there are some metals that react with water, and some react violently. See the link below to the related question about the metals that will float on water. There aren't many of them. If the metal you are considering isn't on the list of metals that willfloat on water, then it won't.

If you can float in space why cant you float on earth?

The air is less dense than your body, so you sink through it. The opposite is true for water, which is more dense than your body, so you float in it.

How does a ship stay on top of water?

a ship stays on water frombuoyancy which makes it float. the saltier the water the more buoyancy there is, enabling more weight to float on top
