Wolves howl to claim territory as a starter. They also howl during combat with another pack, but they mak their howl wavy so it sounds like there are more then there really are in the pack. Lastly wolves how to signal messages such as "let's meet up".
It's how they strengthen their bonds to each other, but also to

show they are going out to hunt or to scare other unwanted packs/wolves away from their territory.

Wolves only appear to be howling at the moon. In reality they are simply communicating with one another. Sometimes this communication is between members of the same pack and sometimes the communication is between members of different packs.
Grey Wolves actually don't howl at the moon. People hear wolves howling the most during a full moon, because it is the most likely time, during the night, that a wolf pack would be hunting because they are using the light of the moon to see. And the howling keeps the wolves together.
Have you ever heard a wolf howling at the moon? It's a pretty

unmistakable sound! So, why do wolves like the moon so much and always

howl at it??The answer is that scientists have found that wolves' howling

doesn't actually have very much (if anything) to do with the moon. Most likely,

the reason we associate the howling with the moon is that wolves are more

active on bright, clear nights, so we mostly hear them howling on nights when

we can also see the moon. It's probably just a coincidence that the two so

often occur together! In truth, most researchers have found that wolves'

howling is much more about communicating with each other. Howls are used by

wolves to say many things - they can express happiness, loneliness, or can be

a way of letting other wolves know where they're at! And even though they're

most famous for howling, wolves can also bark, yelp, growl, and whimper!

WOLVES ARE AWESOME!

Sorry if this is a bit long but hope it helps!

The dude who wrote that just copied it from Whyzz.com -.- Ok anyways, so it has nothing do with the moon, but they howl with the moon so they can communicate with there pack
Wolves dont really howl at the moon, they howl to communicate with their pack and to Warn other predetors that their there
Wolves do not howl at the moon. Wolves howl to communicate with members of the pack. To say 'I'm over here' or 'Here is a herd of deer' or 'I got the prey, help me drag it to the den', etc. wolves actually lift their head in the air to "throw" their voice so when a wolf is howling they are making it echo around

Answer 2

It is a fact that wolves DO NOT howl at the moon. Howl is a form of communication between a wolf pack and a part of their lagnuage along with signes and gestures, sounds and facial; expressions.

So no they do not for it is also an danger for their pack, alerting near by rival apcks and scaring away prey which they shall need in future.

After a wolf has found a mate for the year they must find a territory or den to raise their pups, when they have found a territory they howl to warn other animals and wolves to back off that land, it's their way of marking territory along with urinating over most of the land.

Wolves don't have many predators but their pups would make a good meal to a coyote, eagle or bear, so this is why they must be very overprotective about this.

Wolves may also howl to attract a mate.

Howling is also used to call back a mate from hunting if there is an emergency.

Wolves howl....But they don't howl at the moon. In fact wolves have no interest in the moon at all. The common myth of a wolf howling at the moon probably comes from the way the wolves howl. When wolves howl they lift their heads towards the sky and it looks as if they are howling at the moon. But why do they lift their heads when howling ? Wolves lift their heads when they howl because the sound waves carry further than what they would if the wolf didn't lift its head when howling. A wolfs howl can be heard up to 6 miles away. Wolves howl mainly at night because they are nocturnal animals. Wolves howl for various reasons to warns off other wolf packs, To find each other, call for the pack to meet up and sometimes they may just howl for fun . Each wolf will have a slightly different howl. So wolves can tell each other apart even in the dead of night. In fact wolves don't just howl at night they also howl at dawn, dusk and day. The alpha wolf will have a howl that is lower in frequency. Wolves in packs howl all the time but lone wolves do not howl as much because they do not want their where about to be known by potential predators.

On sims what can you do as wolf?

Werewolves, right? Well, werewolves don't do much of anything different than grow LOTS of facial hair and growl all the time. They only keep their wolf form at night, and when they turn back into their human form, they can no longer howl, growl or scowl in customary wolf fashion. Werewolves have the ability to howl at the moon and summon other wolves, and change someone else into a werewolf. They stalk around crouched over with their arms held up in front of them funny, like they can't get used to them swinging at their sides. Werewolves can still cook food, dance the Smustle, and take a dip in the pool, just like a regular sim. So werewolves aren't that different from a normal sim. Treat them with kindness and you just might not get eaten! (Joking) P.S. some wants and fears may be related to werewolf behavior once your sim has been bitten.

Do coyotes howl at the moon?

Coyotes are similar to wolves in many ways, but not the howl. Wolves have a clear, smooth howl, and coyotes have a whimper-like howl. When coyotes howl, they are barking and then let out a short howl, then keep doing high pitched howls.

Why do wolves howl to the moon?

wolves don't specifically howl to the moon. They don't think "hey there's a moon! I'm going to howl to it". People normally think they howl to the moon because they usually howl at night. But that's because wolves are nocturnal. They are awake during the day time as well and do sleep at night sometimes. But they normally hunt at night. This, i do not know why. Wolves howl to communicate and when they are hunting communicating is very important.
