You don't necessarily 'have' to do fitness. There just happens to be a lot of benefits from being active and getting in shape. The reason people exercise or workout in the gym isn't limited to one answer.
To explain this, you have to know what people mean by fitness and being fit. Now, being fit is easy to explain. It is the everyday word for someone looking healthy, having those sweet abdominal muscles and going to the gym everyday. Fitness on the other hand is a much more complicated term that can make one to be fit. Fitness is a bunch of healthy life choices you make that lead to your well being. Things like cardiovascular activities, balanced diet and not smoking are things that are part of fitness and healthy lifestyle.
Now why do you have to do fitness? Because there is no reason not to. This is why I wanted to write an expert answer for this question, since I do have to disagree with what the user below mentioned in his answer - everybody should have to do things that promote fitness. Whether it is something so simple as going to a walk everyday or eating a clean, healthy, and balanced diet.
To further emphasize what was asked in the question - what is it for? The most common misconception is that fitness is for looking good and that being fit and fitness are the same concepts. This can be easily misunderstood, since most of the fitness role models are in very strict and limiting areas of fitness, like bikini fitness. They are all bad at showing a prime example of being healthy. It is not that they aren't healthy - that is not what I am claiming. It is more about them being in a state where it is nearly impossible for a normal 9 to 5 worker to achieve without an incredibly limited and strict lifestyle. Fitness should be for your benefit. Fitness should promote your physical health, making you live a longer better life without pain. It should also be a factor in your mental health - a stress reliever and a way to escape reality for just tiny bits at a time. That's what fitness is all about.
