You use folders to clean up your desktop or move stuff around in groups.

Every item stored on your PC, whether it is a document, picture, song, game or whatever, is a file. Folders help organize these files, so that for each particular program there can be one folder that contains all the files it needs in one place.

You don't need folders on a computer. Folders are designed to help you keep track of everything and not lose any important files. Some people, like me, have hundreds of documents and if it weren't for folders, I would never be able to find anything.

If you want my advice, I have one folder with my name, and within it and I have 26 folders: each called a letter of the alphabet. Then inside those I have more folders, which are the topic of the thing within it. I only create those folders if I have anything to put inside it; otherwise it's just a complete waste of space.

Directories, or "folders" are a very important organizational aspect of a filesystem and operating system, even though it's just a file that contains references to locations of files.

It is used for organizing data, like file folders. Instead of having to search all of your files, you can have folders containing similar things.
