It does default to a Web Search. Since Answers.com contains over 4 million topics, is it possible you're getting results, just not the ones you want? And, you can always use the do a Web search for your word with the drop down menu next to the word Search.

Just click "Search Questions" on the left. Then click on Members and put who you want to find in the blank. Then click Search Members.
You can search for an article that you read on answers.com from the past by just typing the title of the article or the theme of the article.

You can do a search for the Internet Explorer webpage. You will then be able to follow the steps to load it as the default on your computer.
