The parents protect the egg(s) from freezing by either sitting on them to keep them warm or in the case of Emperor Penguins the male keeps the egg warm by keep it balanced on his feet and covered with his feathers while the female is off feeding in the ocean. If the egg is left on the snow for too long it will freeze. Also, not all penguins live in the cold regions of the world so they don't have to worry about losing their eggs to the cold weather.
