Being a computer scientist this makes me angry. It tells your computer how to intrepret the file you are receiving. An analogy can be made where HTTP is the language your computer is speaking. One purpose of HTTP is to receive ANY type of file, not just HTML. What do you think happens when you visit YouTube? It is now even being used just to communicate data, one notable data format being JSON. Anyway, it is important because it brings information to users quickly in an easy to understand format and also in a way that is pretty to look at - which is important if you want people to use computers. -Deo Favente
