During various trips through the area, George Bird Grinnell became so inspired by the scenery that he worked to establish a national park which he referred to as the "Crown of the Continent". The Great Northern Railroad soon advertised the splendors of the region to the public and also lobbied for the area to become a national park. Henry L. Stimson, a politician, also visited the area and join the group of supporters for a national park.

Glacier is part of a large preserved ecosystem collectively known as the "Crown of the Continent Ecosystem", all of which is primarily untouched wilderness of a pristine quality.
