James Monroe was famous because he was the fifth president of the USA.
He was also the last of the Revolutionary War heroes to be elected as President.
He was famous for the establishment of the Monroe Doctrine, which warned European countries to avoid colonization of the Western Hemisphere. This helped latin-American countries become independent, and was not back by any military power (the united states did not have much military, they had only gained their independence 4 decades earlier).
I think the Monroe Doctrine is what most people remember him for.
James Monroe was a US President 1817-1825, the third of the "Virginia Dynasty": Jefferson, Madison and Monroe all were from Virginia, all served two terms in office. Monroe served with Washington in the Revolution, negotiated the Louisiana Purchase, signed the Missouri Compromise into law, and proclaimed the Monroe Doctrine. He is most famous for the "Monroe Doctrine" written by his Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams. No European power could make a colony in the Americas. The United States would stay out of Europe's affairs. The British navy helped to enforce the Doctrine because it wanted an open door to trade in the former Spanish colonies. Because the Jeffersonian-Democrats were in such large majorities at the start of Monroe's first administration, the time is sometimes called "The Era of Good Feelings" following the patriotism of the War of 1812. But his administration saw economic troubles and the sectionalism leading up to the Missouri Compromise. In his term he saw Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine and Missouri admitted to the Union, for a total of twelve free soil states to twelve slave states.
President Monroe is best remembered as the author of the "Monroe Doctrine". Essentially, this document, which was drafted in 1823, stated that any further attempt by European nations to colonize America would be viewed by us as an act of aggression. In simpler terms, we told Europe that we were independent, that America was our turf now, and to stay out of our back yard.
However, the U.S. did agree to recognize areas already colonized by foreign nations and respect the European nations' rights to these areas (but not to further expansion of them). This latter policy was discarded in later years.
James Monroe was important for being the 5th President of the U.S. He was also one of the Founding Fathers and part of the Virginia Dynasty.
He introduced Monroe doctrine in 1823 and he was the fifth president.
