A chemical compound always consists of two or more elements combined together, and therefore molecules of at least two atoms. A substance which was only one element would simply be a sample of the element. There are some monoatomic

elements, the noble gases, helium and group 18 neon argon etc.

Monatomic means having only one atom. A compound is made up of at least two different elements, and therefore cannot have just one atom.
