Over time, the soil beneath your grass can get very hard and compact. This is especially true for lawns in the northern US with cold winters and lots of snow. You need to be able to reduce this soil compaction and get water, air and nutrients down into your roots. Core aeration helps to accomplish this. It can also help with the uptake of fertilizer and the break down of thatch.

I've been aerating my lawn for the past few years and have seen noticeable results from it. Hope this helps!
