Rural Protestants, through the Anti-Saloon League, started the movement on the basis that it was publicly immoral and unhealthy. Prohibition, which did not make private possession and consumption illegal, become unpopular by 1933 and was finally repealed December 1933.

A misguided attempt at behavior control. It was "decided" that alcohol's bad effects - poor health, poverty and distress that would lead to crime and disorder, needed to be addressed by banning the making and sale of alcohol. It was also felt that bars gave our nation a bad image.

Alcohol is not illegal in the US as long as you are 21 or over. Lack of responsible behavior on the part of people under 21 is believed to be the cause of this age law.
