In any electric power generator except solar, wind, or hydro, the generator is

turned with the pressure of steam. In order to get steam, you have to boil water.

In order to boil water, you need a lot of heat. The easiest way to get a lot of heat

is to burn something. The most popular things to burn in electric power plants are

coal, oil, and natural gas. Coal has always been the favorite, especially in the USA,

because there's so much of it here and that makes it cheap. Unfortunately, it's also

the dirtiest, and the most unhealthy for people who live near the places where large

quantities of it are burned. These inconvenient facts are getting more attention now

than they ever did before.
