If you're talking about water service to a home, copper used to be used from the late 70's through the early 90's. With the advent of plastic piping, the cost for installing this type of piping is dramatically reduced. Also, many soils throughout the country have a high metal content which creates electrolysis with the copper pipe causing premature failure of that pipe. Plastic pies don't have to worry about that. So, its mostly a money issue.

Copper pipes are now most commonly used in plumbing. Lead pipes were used long ago, and the word plumbing is derived from the Latin word for lead (plumbum). Iron pipes were used until relatively inexpensive copper pipes became readily available during the twentieth century.

Lead (and copper).
There is no chemical reaction that will happen if galvanized pipes are connected to copper pipes via a brass intermediary. The reason is that brass does not react to either copper or zinc, the mineral used to galvanize metal pipes.
copper metal is ussualy used for making pipes
Copper pipes are used in refrigeration system because of their great resistivity to corrosion and oxidation ( last longer). Furthermore, it is very malleable.
