That question brings to mind a field trip that my herpetology class took to do a population survey on some salamanders that lived in the vicinity of a cliff. One of the students lost his footing and went over the cliff. The professor, quite technically proficient in anatomy, was completely unnerved by the bone protruding from the student's leg and relinquished the task of stabilizing the victim to a few of us students who had actual experience and first aid training.
Book learning and virtual dissection is no substitute for the real thing. A medical student that has never worked on a cadaver would likely make a poor surgeon. It isn't something that you want to learn by on-the-job training.
