Although no direct national statistics are kept on the number of citizens who consider themselves Democrats or Republican because the national political parties are actually made up of the political parties in the 50 states (and the 11 or so territories) there are surveys that estimate political affiliation.
Most folks don't consider this statistic relevant as lots of Republicans could live in one state and lots of Democrats could live in another state and the states are the source of the electoral college where the ONLY national use of political parties are actually relevant. So, it is not something people care about except for bragging rights.
In general, about one-third of the country is Democratic, one-third Republican and one-third independent. These numbers swim around three or four points to a side depending on which party is looking like a real idiot at the moment.
The reason they are more common is due to the fact they have existed longer than the third parties and thus get the most recognition.
Neither most of the US is independent.
As of now, the Democrats in the US Senate lost 8 seats to the Republicans. There will be more Republicans in the Senate, now, than Democrats, meaning the the Republicans will control the Senate. They already control the House.
As of 2011, Gallup polling found that 31% of Americans identified as Democrats (tying a 23-year low), 27% as Republicans, and 40% as independents (largest in 60 years). Nevertheless, since more independents leaned to the Republicans, when including the leaners, the democrats and republicans ended up tied at 45 percent (from wikipedia)
There are 2 main political parties in the US, the Republicans and the Democrats. The Democrats are in charge of the Executive Branch. In the Legislative Branch, there are 2 houses, the House of Representatives and the Senate. In the House of Representatives the Republicans have control, but in the Senate the Democrats have control. In the Judicial Branch there are 4 accepted conservatives (republicans) and 3 accepted liberals (democrats) the remaining 2 vote both ways; so it can be said that Republicans have the judicial branch.
