Music and singing in drama is mostly used to express things that dialogue cannot. If you think about it, a lot of the lyrics used and sentiments expressed in songs would sound pretty corny in dialogue. Also, just one line cannot express the magnitude of emotion that a song can. A character can say to his love, "I love you," but it just doesn't mean as much as bursting into a song about how much he loves her.

However, sometimes, songs can just be inserted into a play to pass time during a complicated scene transition.
