It was doomed because Romeo and Juliet were pawns in a game played by people far older than them, for one thing. In their love other adults seize upon the chance to fufill their own dreams, like Friar Lawrence. He agrees to marry them because he thinks conflicts can be eased, not because Romeo and Juliet are truly in love.

In addition they were from rivaling families, but that's kind of obvious.

In Shakespeare"s time there was only Comedy and Tragedy- the idea of a serious drama that turns out okay for the lead characters- did not come along until much later. Thus, suicide was a predictable device to (resolve) plots to keep them in the tragedy category- The only way one might redeem the tale is to have either Romeo or Juliet or both- come out of a coma in a modern hospital ( why he gave Italian gangsters English sounding names I never could figure out) and finding out the whole thing was a nightmare or a bad trip- perhaps Romeo should consider applying for the Narcotics squad, Verona, PD. Somewhat oddly, no modern adaptation has tried to undo the damage and seek a felicitous outcome, which would appease the censors- Juvenile and teenage suicide is a nightmare, not a Happy Hunting Ground!

For the reason of the play itself, The reason they had to die was to bring peace to Verona by ending the feud between the two houses.

A number of people died, particularly Romeo, Juliet and Paris. Whether Mercutio and Tybalt's deaths flowed from Romeo and Juliet's relationship is much more dubious, but it was a conditioning factor.

Suffice it to say that had Romeo and Juliet not fallen in love with each other things would have been different, but not necessarily better. Probably Juliet would be alive, as Mrs. Paris, and there would be no spark in her dull drab life. She would be like her mother. Romeo might never have found any real reason to live. And the feud would have dragged on and on.

It ends in violence and death and both lead characters die by their own hand- that, my friend, is tragedy. They did Drugs, one of them stabbed herself- but was already on drugs.

Because Shakespeare had already decided the ending when he started writing it.
