Why is rubber no longer used to cover the wires of domestic electrical cables in households?

I believe this is because of rubber's tendency to dry out and become brittle over time. The new wire coatings, such as nylon and PVC, last much longer. Not to mention when pulling actual wires into conduit, nylon is much smoother than rubber and easier to install.
