Why sex ratio of Bihar is lowest?

There are several reasons for low sex ratio-

1) Female foeticide-A large no of girls are killed in the womb only though determining sex before child birth is illegal.

2) Lack of Education among masses-people are not enough eduated to know the importance of girls .Many of them are not even aware about role of girl in a family .

3) Problem of son prefernce-This problem is related to poor mentality of people who consider boys as a family continuer and more capable of earning wage .

4) Dowry system - The dowry system plays a dominant role in poor or middle class families to avoid girls child because they fear marriage of the girl would be a expensive venture since dowry needs to be paid.

Mainly two things:

1. An Indian woman is expected to bring a considerable dowry with her into marriage, making it very expensive for a family with several daughters to get them all married.
2. An indian woman getting married is (traditionally) pretty much expected to LEAVE her family behind, and "join" her husband's family. With a weak system of social services, care of the elderly is mostly the responsibility of the SONS in the family.

What this adds up to in reality is that daughters are expensive and don't contribute to old age security.

Sons OTOH actually BRING money and are able and expected to care for their parents at old age.

So, hardly surprising, many indian families very much prefer to have sons rather than daughters. The use of pre-natal gender determination and selective abortions is considerable.

Sex ratio in Bihar is way better than majority of states in India. The lowest sex ratio is in Haryana.
