The mortality rate of The Great Mortality was ridiculously high. It is currently estimated that a quarter of the European population died, and in London more than one hundred fifty thousand died. Thousands of bodies were buried at a time, and some unfortunate victims were buried alive. (Think about the "I'm not dead yet" scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail)
The name 'the Great Mortality' was coined (so to speak) by the Church, who were really big on dramatic names. Europe was extremely religious at the time, and many thought that this pandemic was god's judgment on a sinful community.

∙ 9y agoOne of the main symptoms was bleeding under the skin, this blood as it clotted turned black, resulting in corpses that were largely black. Thus BLACK death.

∙ 14y agoI've been researching this and there can be 2 reasons. the first reason is the obvious one- because one form of the Black death; the septicemic plague, appeared as dark purple/ black patches on the skin due to blood poisoning and because so many people died of this plague, they named it the Black Death because of it. the 2nd reason is the fact that this time in history was such a dark and scary time because, in 2 years, over 50 million people had died from it and could be called the Black Death because of the period of time.

∙ 11y agoThe Black Death was so called because of the large black, pus-filled buboes that were found on the sufferers body. These buboes were lymph glands that were engrossed with white blood cells in an attempt the fight off the infection.
