An endorsement by Senator Edward Kennedy is seen as a positive endorsement for any Democrat candidate, for the simple reason that this carries an entire swath of voters who are guaranteed to vote for the endorsee / candidate.
This is an extremely complex issue, but the main reason the Kennedy support is important, is that John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy were viewed in their time as bringing change and youth to the Democrats, which generally is seen as a positive thing in the Democrat camp.
Ultimately, endorsements are vote carriers, which makes them very important in a democracy with two dominant political parties.
