Approximately 44 percent of Australia's interior is desert, and is unable to support any industry. Another large percentage is semi-arid, populated sparsely by cattle and sheep properties. Apart from sheep and cattle, there are other large agricultural areas and crop land inland, particularly in the eastern states, parts of the south, and the southwestern corner of the continent. Again, these properties require large tracts of land in order to be economically viable.
Aside from this, the only other major industry that operates away from the coasts is mining, and there is a limit to how many people can be employed in such industries. Therefore, a great many people need to work in business, trades and professions that are concentrated in the cities and towns through the coastal areas of the continent.
Most of Australia is either desert, semi-desert or marginal at best. The fertile crescent down the east coast is the most habitable area for large populations.
Both interiors are hash and hostile to life.
Partially because they like living near the sea, partially because there's a desert in the middle.
Because the interior of Australia is dry and barren = desert

75% of Australians live within an Hours drive of the east coast of Australia.
The large majority of Australians live along the Eastern Coast. Australia's 3 biggest cities sit along this coast - Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane. You can see city populations here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia_by_population
It is a generally accepted fact that 60% of Australians live along the coast, although where the coast stops and inland begins is not defined exactly. The Australian Bureau of Statistics could help with an exact figure Twicky
in my point of view it is because you could get a really GOODview of the beach---Could it be to do with the demographic that 97% of all Australians live within an hours drive of the coast?---
Australians do not like deserts any more than other people do. Many Australians recognise the uniqueness of the Australian deserts, while others never give them a thought. the vast majority of Australians do not live in the desert, but on or near the coast, where the major cities are.
1 in 18 Amaricans live within about 200 miles of downtown Los Angeles.
This question could be asking one of 2 things: Why do Australia's Population Love on the coast? Why do Australia's Population Live on the coast? Answers: Australians love on the coast because calm turquoise water, warm sand under your feet and a sweet breeze along a sunset is the perfect environment to love someone- an Australian would be crazy to love in the wild Outback when they can love on the beautiful Australian coast. Australians live on the coast because that's where all the water, vegetation and bustling life exists. It's hard to grow a mango tree on Eyeres rock or go surfing on a poisonous snake in the middle of a giant desert, so Australians Live and LOVE on the coast.
Australians are people who live in Australia
Most Australians and New Zealanders live in urban areas.
Generally, it is accepted that approximately 90% live within an hour of the coastline and only 10% live inland. Bear in mind that there are no real bodies of water inland either.
