When we either read or view horror, it creates an emotional reaction, usually fear. While we do not enjoy experiencing fear in our actual lives, we do enjoy being able to experience it in an artistic sense, while knowing that we personally are not actually in danger. We are more intensely engaged with life when the stakes (even in a fictional sense) seem to be higher. Matters of life and death are exciting. In addition, there are further artistic advantages to horror. When fictional characters are placed in dire situations, the author is putting them to the test, and finding out what they are really made of; it is very revealing of people's true character. Hence, the reader or viewer also gains added insight.
