If you look at "In a Grove," I think each character has their own agenda; hence, each person gives a different account of the story. Also, an important aspect of the story deals with truth. What is truth? The age old question is important, and Akutagawa challenges the reader to ponder that question as we analyze all the characters in the story, not just the 3 main characters, but also the monk and the woodcutter.
