New York started as a Dutch colony, but the British were not very happy about it. So, the king gave his brother, the Duke of York, the land where NYC now sits. The Duke landed in the Dutch colony and the Dutch were out numbered and they surrendered. Thus, we have New York state and city. The harbor was one reason why everyone wanted it. It is deep, wide, and connects to the Hudson River which means that people and goods could go upstate as well as just coming into NY. This was very important because the more people could use the rivers the more they could move and sell. Where a port is most often a city develops.
New York was originally a Dutch trading post known as New Amsterdam... it was created as a New World port.
