It wasn't bad for him. In fact, he controlled vast lands, collected taxes, was judge and jury in civil cases, had serfs to do his work, and ate well. When Rome fell it was the strong men who became "lords " that filled the void. They were actually gangs that gave themselves the power, money, and the best life had to offer for the time. Castles were built for protection and to give the message not to mess with the man inside.
