Because, during the trip from Egypt to the Holy Land, he became frustrated when the Israelites started to become restless and complaining about the hard trip they have to take when they could have just stayed in Egypt. They also started to question whether God was actually watching over them and whether he was there at all. At one point, they complain about a lack of water since they are walking through a desert and Moses gets fed up with them so he splits a rock with his cane and produces water without asking the grace of God to provide for them. God denies him the right to go into promised land because he abused his powers that were given by God
