AnswerThe Sumerians needed help to achieve victory in war, protection against enemies and petty criminals, as well as good harvests and good fortune in life's undertakings. Through religion, they could foretell the future and receive advice as to the best course of action for future success. Failure to show proper respect to the gods could bring misfortune and disaster.

Religion is very important for humanity because it gives us a sense of purpose and direction, makes us responsible for our actions, gives value to ourselves and our actions, and provides genuine objective philosophical perspectives about the world and our place in it. Even in this age where so much emphasis is placed on science and its technological spin-offs, religion is not going away, not anytime soon. Despite all the progress we have made in science and technology, with coming to better understand our world and ourselves, as well as extended lifespans, better health, our work becoming easier, and more opportunities for leisure, we as human beings are not satisfied with just that. We crave more. Without meaning, purpose, direction, responsibility, and a sense of dignity, we cannot function successfully as human beings. Science and technology by themselves cannot provide any of the aforementioned. This is where philosophy and by extension religion come in. Human existence is full of many trials and tribulations and religion gives us hope in the midst of that. Each of us will die one day and religion promises a future life of eternal happiness on the condition that we live an exemplary life here on earth. Religion teaches us that we are not mere animals with biological instincts to eat, sleep, reproduce, and play, but immortal souls clothed in mortal bodies capable of much potential, of realizing our ultimate destiny. Religion is not just ancient mythology, nor is it fiction or based on mere opinion or personal preference, but provides genuine truth about who we are as human beings, why we are here, and what we are to do.

Religion connects you to the majority of mankind, past and present. No ancient society ever existed that did not believe in the supernatural. Those who dismiss belief may be compared to an astronaut floating away from the lifeline.

Also:

1) Religion may assist you in overcoming social pressures or bad influences.

2) Religion will often add to your self-discipline.

3) Religion may provide you with a whole additional layer of education.

4) Religion may provide emotional fortitude, helping one stay confident and hopeful.

5) Religion will provide a sense of identity and association, with ambiance and mutual help.

6) Religion provides a life and a sense of purpose.

7) Religion seeks to answer the big questions: How and why am I alive? What does it all mean?
