Sears Tower was renamed Willis Tower on July 16, 2009. There are a number of good sites with brief histories of the tower. For example: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/sears_tower.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears_Tower You may also want to borrow a copy of this History Channel documentary from your library (or request that they borrow it from another library): http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/156626508?sloc=Illinois Hope these are helpful! --Bill Pardue Arlington Heights Memorial Library http://www.ahml.info Librarians--Ask Us, We Answer!

The idea may have first been suggested by Frank Lloyd Wright, but it was designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill. Bruce Graham was the lead architect and Fazlur Khan the structural engineer. The Sears Tower was renamed Willis Tower on 16 July, 2009.

Sears had it built to consolidate its company's offices into one building, but the building stood half empty and the planed growth projections they had made when building never came.

Sears eventually moved out selling it to AEW Capital Management, in the mid 1990s. Sears' naming rights expired in 2003.

In 2009 Willis Tower became the new name.
