They are basically the ingredients for matter. If we can find a way to separate atoms from a molecule and/or bond them together we can create ANYTHING. No more need to worry about oxygen, clean water, food, diamonds etc.
Not to mention the amount of energy you get when you separate an atom (I.E. the Atomic bomb, which, if its energy can be released slowly, can provide HUGE amounts of energy)
