To speed cars up, not slow them down. Maurice Gatsonides was a professional rally driver whose desire was to improve his speed when going round corners. The "Gatsometer" (as it as known back then) had to pressure sensitive rubber strips along the road, that when driven over would start & stop a stopwatch respectively. It allowed him to see how much speed he could have in a corner when taking different lines. In 1971, a radar beam was used in place of the strips, which is also the time he realised that it could be used to record the speed of motorists & prosecute them, should the need arise.
Gatso is a brand of speed camera invented by Maurice Gatsonides.
